Established in 1967, Nixon Hire is one of the longest running businesses in the hire sector. In 2017 we were proud to celebrate our 50th year of trading. Now in our 54th year we are proud to still offer excellent customer service alongside modern and reliable products.

John Nixon Ltd was incorporated by John Nixon in December 1967 at Back New Bridge Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. The company’s headquarters (barely big enough to service a few machines at a time) were situated in Back New Bridge Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

John employed a fitter while he toured Northern England and Scotland providing a repair service. Sales enquiries began to come in and John Nixon Ltd became a distributor for a number of leading plant manufacturers.
A Stihl saw cost £9 per week to hire. Today's weekly hire cost is an average of around £17.50 - the relative value from 1971 to present day is calculated at £114.70!!
Stockton Depot opened.
We moved into the 1.5 acre site in Water Street - part of the 9 acre site we now own.
Edinburgh Depot opened - first Depot to open in Scotland.
Difficult trading as still in the grips of a recession.
John Nixon Ltd purchased the plant division of Stanley Miller. This acquisition included 70 second hand steel security containers. Soon after this the company began to manufacture these containers. Welders and joiners were recruited to complete this phase of growth. Stanley Miller went bust in the same year and we lost £160k which was a huge set back for the Company - the next few months would be focused on recovery...
Berwick Depot opened.
The vehicle hire side expanded to boast an 800 strong fleet of vans. Vehicle hire started with just 6 Bedford CF vans!!

As the company came out of the recession in the early nineties, the demand for construction equipment boomed. Nixon Hire was able to expand its services with a full range of small tools, plant, accommodation, vehicles and portable toilets.
Sunderland Depot opened.

The vehicle hire side of the business was sold to focus on construction plant and equipment hire and sales. Proceeds from the sale of the vehicle hire business were invested in a Sunderland depot, opening in October 1994.
After winning a cable contract in the Leeds/Bradford area, the company opened a Bradford depot.

Nixon Site Services was established and 25 portable toilets were purchased to hire out. Demand grew and so did their supply of units.
The Bradford depot was relocated to a larger depot on a two acre site off Leeds Road.
Perth Depot opened.
The first Nixon Hire website went live!
A bespoke electronic hire system, MCS, was implemented. Nixon Hire continue significant investment into technology and electronic systems today.

Aberdeen and Dundee Depots opened following Cox Hire Acquisition. Glasgow, Cupar Depots opened following purchase of Owen Pugh toilet division. Toilets became a core product throughout the Depot network.
Carlisle and Liverpool Depots opened.

Wakefield Depot opened and a new larger Sunderland Depot was purchased. The company gains full accreditation to ISO 9001 quality standard across all Depots.
The UK and beyond was suffering the effects of 'THE GREAT DEPRESSION'.
Our recession busting initiatives Nixon Hire Middle East, Nixon Hire eXtra and Nixon Hire Direct were established. The unique services provided by our dedicated teams - sourcing and crosshire from Nixon Hire eXtra and bespoke managed service from Nixon Hire Direct - remain an integral part of our business today.

The latest in mobile welfare facilities - Welfarevans - were launched! 16 years after the last hire vehicles were sold vehicle hire was back. We now have over 300 in the fleet!!
Inverness Depot opened - this is now known as Highlands (Nairn). The company launches their ambitious, 2020 Vision, a new strategic business plan leading up to the year 2020.
The Central Support Function is relocated to new offices in Newcastle. Also named as finalists in the European Rental Awards.
Warrington Depot opened and Cupar, Perth & Dundee Depots were consolidated into a large hub based in Dundee
Nixon Hire named 'Company of the Year' in The Journal newspaper Business Awards. To be recognised for such an award which saw Nixon Hire compete against businesses from all industries was a real highlight!!

We rebranded and relaunched Nixon Sales Division too!
We launched our Company Vision & Values - this determined Who we are and what we stand for as a Company. You can read more about this here...

New site for a bigger and better Glasgow Depot which offered all products! Continued significant investment into technology to improve the efficiency of operations and improve the quality of information available to the customer.
We acquired our most southern Depot to date in Nottingham, an opportunity which arose due to the collapse of Hewden. We offer all products from this site. The 2020 business plan was also revised & relaunched due to so may milestones being achieved ahead of schedule!
We opened our Depot in Castleford and 2017 we celebrated 50 years of trading! This is an achievement we are incredibly proud of. Nixon Hire have experienced the highs of significant growth as well as battling the lows of tough economic recessions. It's our products, systems, technology and most importantly our people which make Nixon Hire the company it is today. We value our customers and our suppliers and thank them for their support throughout our 50 years of business.

We were awarded North East Freight Operator of the Year 2018 and one of our employees was awarded North East HGV Driver of the Year - great success for our transport team! We also acquired Mechplant assets in a multi-million pound deal. Also in 2019, we opened our Newcastle smart store storage yard as well as adding our snoozepod sleeper cabins, hybrid welfare units and the h20 solar pod to our fleet of products.

Elliot announces the sale of loohire to Nixon Hire and we acquire portable toilets from Universal Tanker Solutions. Our renewables division is launched in 2019, the same year we are awarded with a green apple award. We also announced plans to create a dedicated hire desk in our Central Support Office in Newcastle. 

We were successfully awarded 100% accreditation for ISO9001 and ISO14001. We added thousands of new products to our small tools offering. During COVID-19, we quickly mobilised plans to allow service and product continuity to our customers.
